A boy walks back from school with a Mickey Mouse school bag on his shoulders and lunch basket in one hand thinking just about one thing: What is mummy preparing for the evening snacks???? Well, what else you expect of an 8year old boy just in his 3rd standard!
Sitting on the sofa in front of the TV with a plate of yummy Maggie watching his favorite Popeye in CN, Vijay, calls up loud to his mom in the kitchen: “Mummieee… come here na…”
Mom comes with a glass of hot bornvita and sits besides him to listen to his usual narration of the day’s happenings at school.
“Mummy, today-na Kanchan miss told us about going for an excus… (he could hardly spell that) to Mahabalipuram next week” Mom understood and asked him back about the cost. Vijay – “200 rupees mom, its there in my Hand Book. And mummy, Shalu said she’ll surely be going and she's paying the money tomorrow itself. I too want to pay the money tomorrow”
Mom had a listened a lot of Shalini (Shalu) in the past two months, when Vijay’s 3rd class started. Shalini was a newcomer to Vijay’s class and they have become friends just in a week’s time. Mom was yet to meet Shalini, she knew most of Vijay’s classmates, who were all boys. So far, Vijay never spoke about girls nor did he ever have a girl friend ;)
Vijay was too shy to talk to girls, he himself has expressed this to his mom but Shalu was an exception now. In these two months of their friendship, mom has learnt many things about Shalu-Shalini. Shalu’s dad is an army officer and they lived in Delhi before moving to Chennai. Shalu’s mom is a house wife but teaches bharatnatyam at home. Shalu too is a good dancer. Shalu has a small brother Nikki-Nikhil, just two years old and Shalu likes him a lot.
Mom thought on what all topic these children converse. Shalu’s favorite actor was Rajini as is Vijay’s. Shalu likes Tom & Jerry but Vijay loves Popeye. They share so many things between them in this young age along with their lunch.
The next day: “Mummy, do you know to prepare Aloo Paratha???” Vijay shouted to mom on entering home from school that evening.
Mom: “Why da?”
Vijay: “Mummy, I’m bored of all your curd n sambar rice…”
Mom: “Where did you taste Aloo paratha from???” asked, knowing the obvious “Shalu brought it mom” – Vijay’s reply.
Mom was really curious to meet her son’s new and first girl friend – Shalu
“Vijay… Have ur breakfast…its ready…” mom called out from kitchen listening to Vijay starting his bike at the gate. “It’s okay mom… I’m already late for my E-Mech class” Vijay flies off in his bike. Vijay scored all distinctions to get himself a engineering seat in Anna University. It’s just been three months now. Mom was more relaxed now, finding her son studying in the top university of the state. She was more worried, when he was at his school. Though Vijay was brilliant and studious, 12th was always a nightmare for most of the parents.
Even now Vijay discusses about the daily happenings to mom. Vijay now speaks much about Divya, “cutest girl in the class” - as everyone in the class describes her. Vijay also told her mother for some unknown reason, he doesn’t like her. But mom thought otherwise and she had a reason too. Divya was only the second girl, whom Vijay spoke often to her. The first one was his 3rd classmate Shalu. Though he also has talked about few other girls like the ‘very beautiful’ Vidya (10th classmate) and the ‘gorgeous’ Swetha (12th classmate), they hardly last for a month or so. There has been no daily updates on them and faded only in a month.
“Mom, Divya wants to meet you, shall I bring her home tomorrow evening?” enquired Vijay. Mom too was eager to meet Divya, as it took three years for Vijay to change his view on Divya. Both are in the Final Year and were the closest of friends. They have got themselves a software job in different companies. As every mom would like to know whether her son had a relationship with someone, Vijay’s mom too was curious. She had spoken many a times to Divya but never had a chance to meet her. So when Vijay asked her about bringing home Divya, she immediately accepted it by responding “sure, you don’t have to ask permission Vijay”
Vijay dialed his home number, to hear his mom pick up and say “Hallo”. “Mom, I’m in Holy Angels Hospital right now. Doctor asked to admit Maha immediately as the delivery would happen anytime. Call up dad and be here” – Vijay sounded nervous. Vijay is now a Project Manager in reputed Software Company. Got married just a year back to Maha – Mahalakshmi. Mom called up Vijay’s dad and he came down to pick her up from home to see their first grand child. Vijay’s mom liked girl babies a lot as she had only one son. She showed all love she stored in for her daughter to her daughter-in-law, Maha. Maha was a colleague of Vijay, it was love cum arranged marriage. Vijay’s Mom wished she had a grand daughter. Mom and Dad arrived to the hospital right in time. As Vijay was too tensed, to relax the mood the to be grandfather asked the to be father “Vijay, Son or a Daughter???”
Vijay- “Any baby is fine dad (smiles). What do you think mom?”
Mom – “I’m sure that it’s gonna be a girl”
Dad – “How can you be so sure?? I say it’s a grandson”
Vijay – “Dad, if it’s a baby boy you’ll choose his name and if it’s a baby girl mom will”
Just then the doctor came out to congratulate Vijay on being a father of “Twins”… Yes, two beautiful little angels.
Vijay – “Mom, you’ll have to decide on two names now… ”
Mom – “I already have two names in mind”
Vijay – “that is quick, what are they???”
Mom – “ Shalini & Divya”
(Vijay’s Mom always wanted to meet her son’s girl friends Shalini and Divya. She came so close to meeting them but she didn’t.)
